T.C. Pharmaceuticals Co. Ltd is one of the leading F&B companies in Thailand

T.C. Pharma is one of the leading F&B companies in Thailand with a diverse product portfolio comprising four product categories – energy drinks, electrolyte beverages, functional drinks and snacks – and more than thirty product lines under nine brands.

This includes Red Bull, the world’s leading energy drink, which the company’s founder Mr. Chaleo Yoovidhya invented in 1975. T.C. Pharma is the only producer of the Red Bull flavour around the world and, together with the Yoovidhya family, owns the Red Bull trademarks worldwide. The company has over 2,600 employees at its headquarters, production sites and joint-venture locations around the world.

T.C. Pharma founded by Chaleo Yoovidhya in 1956 to import medical materials and products from Europe to Thailand.

In 1975, Mr. Chaleo invented Kratingdaeng, a beverage that combined a stimulating effect with a unique taste profile. Kratingdaeng was an instant hit with the public, and quickly became one of the most popular energy drinks in Thailand.

In 1982, T.C. Pharma began exporting Kratingdaeng to Singapore. This was the start of an international  journey for both T.C. Pharma and Kratingdaeng.

In 1987, T.C. Pharma established its Austria-based joint venture Red Bull GmbH with Mr. Dietrich Mateschitz to introduce a carbonated version of Kratingdaeng, Red Bull, to Europe. Within years, they had expanded and launched an international version of Red Bull around the world.

In 1993, Mr. Chaleo introduced Red Bull to China and started building a factory in Hainan province, his father’s birthplace, to manufacture the energy drink. The product was named ‘Hong Niu’ in Chinese.

Today, T.C. Pharma products cover four product categories with more than 30 product lines under nine brands.

More about Red Bull in China

T.C. Pharma’s founder Mr. Chaleo Yoovidhya was born in Thailand in 1923, the son of an immigrant from Hainan province in China.

Hailing from an unprivileged background, Mr. Chaleo worked in a variety of jobs after finishing primary school, including as a fruit vendor and bus driver. However, he found his calling as a salesman for an international pharmaceutical company, and eventually set up his own business – which later became T.C. Pharmaceutical Industries Co., Ltd. – importing chemicals and manufacturing medicines.

The business was a success with one of the company’s medicines, T.C. Mycin, becoming the best-selling antibiotic in Thailand at the time. However, Mr. Chaleo continued to pursue the development of new products and in 1975, he invented Kratingdaeng (‘Red Bull’). Following Red Bull’s enormous success, Mr. Chaleo increased his focus on the beverage business, building T.C. Pharma to become a leading F&B company in Thailand.

As a devout Buddhist, Mr. Chaleo lived a simple life, and believed strongly in the principles of philanthropy and setting a positive example for society. In his own words: “When one has the means, one should give back to the community,” values that have been entrenched at T.C. Pharma.
